Ride To Eat - FarRide Border Run 10

7th August 2010 Border Village S.A.

Official Finishers List

This is not one of the usual FarRides but one Davo added a couple of years ago. The Border Run has been happening at Border Village every year on the first Saturday of August for 33 years, this being the 34th. It is also the home of "The Pudding" a Big Sister self saucing pudding (long since dead) that has been traveling Australia by motorcycle for over 33 years. You will find very little about the Border Run online, it "just happens" with no organisation or plan.

Note: You must still do at least one 1000klm day before arriving at Border Village, it's only right and fair don't you think.

Suggested Reading:
We also recommend a few reads of the Archive of Wisdom and this excellent write-up on Fatigue

Border Village ( not to be confused with Border Town south east of Adelaide ) is on the SA side of the WA border with Eucla being on the WA side. It is in the middle of nowhere, that is why it's special. There can be anywhere from 80 to over 100 riders in attendance, approx 120 in 2006 for the 30th Anniversary. Many FarRiders will also most likely be camping opposite the road house at Border Village BP, showers are coin operated in the caravan park at the servo. There are cabins if you are quick.

Common layovers the night before are Balladonia roadhouse if coming from the west and Streaky Bay Hotel from the east.

Keep in mind this FarRide has nothing to do with the Border Run, we just use it for a destination to coincide with the run.  It is unlike any other FarRide we do as the distance is far greater for most. Ours will most likely be individual riders meeting but doing their own thing on the way although as its a remote location some may like to buddy up.

Check the forums if you have any concerns or questions on this one as many of us have done the run the last 3 years and have done quite a few Nullarbor crossings We may be able to help.

Information about Border Village

Davo was often asked where the name came from, FarRide. He once watched a movie called Hidalgo.
Quote from online: The Ocean of Fire -- a 3,000 mile survival race across the Arabian desert--was a challenge restricted to the finest Arabian horses ever bred, the purest and noblest lines, owned by the greatest royal families. In 1890, a wealthy sheik invited an American, Frank T. Hopkins, and his horse to enter the race for the first time.

Frank was called "Far Rider" in that movie and Davo liked the term when related to endurance riding.  Thus FarRiders began.
